Reading Tips for Parents
Have a special family sharing time when family members have an opportunity to tell about the books they are reading.
Listen to your child read. Be patient and careful not to criticize. Reading for pleasure should be at an independent level.
Encourage your child to accompany you to a bookstore to look for books on their favorite topics.
Allow your child to subscribe to a magazine in his or her name. A personal copy of a magazine is very exciting and encourages reading.
Celebrate reading! Give your child a book to celebrate a birthday or special occasion.
Library cards open up a world of reading. Encourage all family members to go to their local public library. Become a family of readers.
Provide a quiet, comfortable and inviting place for family members to read.
Older children enjoy being read to. Spend some time each day reading to your child. A letter, an article, or a chapter from a book are good places to begin read-aloud time.
