Trimester 1 is below:

December 5-9, 2005:

This week you and your classmates will become experts regarding the parts of the heart and the path of blood flowing through the heart.

Remember to visit the interactive web sites and use your "walk-through heart" cards each day for reinforcement and practice.

Hartford Stage field trip Tuesday

Quiz Wednesday on parts of the heart, and path of blood as it flows into the heart...to the lungs...back to the heart...and out to all the rest of the body.
Complete the "Circulatory System" review sheet for homework. (due Friday, Dec. 9.)...if there's no school because of snow, bring it to school Monday.
Practice finding your pulse on your wrist.  Complete the "Tiny Tubes" activities and bar graph for Monday, December 12.

December 2, 2005:

Remember to try some of the interactive web sites this weekend!

Use the aspirin web site to learn the blood's path through the heart.

Read the script in your homework packet, and study the heart diagram.

Use your "Walk-Through Heart" cards on a floor to practice explaining to a parent how the blood travels through the heart, to the lungs, back to the heart, and then to all body parts.

December 1, 2005:

Search for interactive web sites about the circulatory system, the heart, or blood.  Use the ones you find to learn answers to some of today's Inquiry questions.  Record what you find on the "Blood Inquiries" worksheet.  Bring in the addresses of the best web sites to share with me and your classmates.

November 29/30, 2005:

Students are to select a "news event"related to the circulatory system, blood, heart diseases, or any aspect related to this human body system and write a summary using the format explained in class.  The final draft will be collected on Friday, Dec. 2nd.

November 28, 2005:

                                               Rainforest Adopt-an-Acre Update:

Many thanks to all of the students, parents, and relatives who have supported the Rainforest Adopt-an-Acre program!!!!  I am pleased to report that so far we have sold enough items for the Nature Conservancy to purchase 18.2 acres of Brazil's Atlantic Rainforest!  This is quite an accomplishment for a first time fundraiser for the class of 2011.....and we still have two more weeks until our next order date of Dec. 12th to continue selling items to adopt more acres!  Ask me for more order coupons if you have run out of them.  Remember to ask your 6th and 8th grade friends to support this fundraiser.

This week is the beginning of the next Unit of Study for us....The Human Body.  We will begin with a study of the Circulatory system.

Students are to make small signs (3"x5" or 4"x6") with the parts of the heart written on them for a "walk through heart" activity we will conduct in order to learn about the path of blood flow through the human heart. Use the list of terms on the study outline that was given out in class on Nov. 28. (Core 3 will receive the outline in class on the 29th).

November 21 and 22, 2005:

The students finished the rough drafts of their lab reports for Monday. Their first typed lab report was turned in on Tuesday....the Neutralization of the polluted Neck River Water.

On Tuesday, the students plotted the pH data they collected from different bodies of water in Madison on their own copies of Madison maps.

As we plotted and labeled the water samples, we discussed the abiotic and biotic factors that could have caused certain water samples to have the acidity that the students recorded them to have. Included in our discussions was amount of human development and homes near the source of the sample, point and non point source pollution, topography, wind directions, possible pollution from marinas along the coast line, pesticides and fertilizers that may have gotten into the water table, and run off into streams, rivers, ponds, and lakes in Madison.

Of particular interest were the two Long Island Sound samples that were collected at two different ends of Madison (near Clinton, and near the Guilford/Madison line). You may enjoy discussing this with your child.

The unit was culminated with a discussion of the many small ways that each student can make a difference in protecting our environment.  I challenged them all to make a commitment to doing one small thing differently or in addition to what they already do to protect the natural world around them.  They may be challenging you to do the  same thing!

Week of Nov. 14 - 18, 2005:

1. While I attended the Project Oceanology trip on Monday, the students read about a variety of environmental issues such as global warming, air and water pollution, acid rain, the ozone layer, the greenhouse effect, oil spills, etc.  Homework consisted of reviewing an environmental glossary, choosing two terms from the glossary, and writing two short paragraphs about what has been learned so far regarding those terms.  2.  Finish any unfinished sections in the environmental issues packet.     3.  Students are to finish writing their materials list, variables, and procedure for the "spill normalization" simulation.

Week of Nov. 7 -11, 2005:

1. The students were not assigned any new homework during this week...only to complete each step of the CT Endangered Animal project (as outlined in their planners).

2.  Classes this week consisted of lab experiences.  The students brought samples of water to school from different bodies of water in Madison.  They used pH indicator paper to measure the acidity or alkalinity of the various water samples., as well as several different detergents, cleaning agents, hydrogen peroxide, etc.

3.  A simulation was started in which students read about a "spill" that occured on I95 that had run off into the Neck River.  Samples of Neck River water were available for testing along with a dilution of hydrochloric acid.

4. Students chose one item to use to try to "normalize " the Neck river contaminated water.  The students will design and conduct their experiments next week.
