Find Your Inner Skunk

Poetry Portfolio – due Thursday, June 12

Over the next week or so, we will be exploring a variety of poetry. Some will be as “deep as puddles.” Others will be “deeper than the deepest ocean.” All of them will offer you a place from which to start writing your own poetry. On the due date listed above, you will submit a Poetry Portfolio consisting of six poems and a unit reflection. Because we will have time to write each day, this portfolio should not be a burden in any way. Rather, it will be a compilation of your favorite in-class writings, which have been refined and enhanced at home. The key to success is to make the most of your class writing time.

Here are the formats from which to choose, although we may not be able to try all of them in class:

  1. Where I’m From
  2. Snapshot
  3. Praise Poem/Ode
  4. Photograph poem (include photo)
  5. One sentence
  6. No sentence
  7. Ask Me How it Feels – inspired by Lucille Clifton
  8. If I Ain’t – inspired by Glennis Redmond
  9. Hats! Hats! Hats! - inspired by Glennis Redmond
  10. Eavesdropping Poem
  11. What’s in a Name
  12. Media Poem: scour a newspaper or magazine, cutting out words or phrases that relate to each other somehow. Then arrange the cut words into an original poem .
  13. Headline Poem: Cut out a newspaper headline. Use it as the first line of a poem you create (paste the actual headline onto the page and continue writing from there . )
  14. Parody – take an existing poem and use its format, rhythm, rhyme to create your own version
  15. Free Verse – free topic – free format!

Note: You may have only ONE of each type of poem, yielding six different formats in the portfolio. At least four of the poems MUST NOT RHYME! (All 6 may be non-rhyming as well!)

Self Evaluation:

The cover page of your portfolio will be your reflection on the work, with emphasis on the process of creating the poems. Include responses to the following:
